Pineapple is one of the world's most unique and exotic tropical fruits, yet it is possible to grow it in a temperate zone under controlled conditions. This tropical or near-tropical plant, will usually tolerate brief exposures to 28° F. Its ripe yellow pulp literally exploded natural sweetness when chewed, made the fruit an item of celebrity and curiosity for gourmet and horticulturist. There are a few forms of pineapple-fresh, dried, candied and jellied. The Malaysian pineapple industry has a high potential to build as an industry that has high return for individuals involved. Other than Philippines, Malaysia is also one of the Asian countries listed in the 11th major world exporters for fresh pineapples. It contributed around 17,000MT, valued at RM10 million of the total export for fresh pineapples for the year 2000. Based on the current situation, the market for Malaysian fresh pineapples has its advantages in the Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Mid East market share. Malaysia has conquered the pineapple market in Singapore and Brunei as both countries imported more than 70% of fresh pineapples for the year 2000. In the year 2001, Thailand is the sole exporter for Malaysian pineapple market 277MT valuing RM349, 704. Meanwhile, the per capita usage for pineapples in Malaysia are 1.7 kg/per head/per year. As in the same year, Malaysia has produced almost 450,000MT (383,145 for fresh consumption and 65,048 for processing). Malaysia is capable of increasing its production by, at least, 13% from the Asian production or 7% from the world production and soon will be in the top 5 list for world pineapple producer.
